This blog is about football. Soccer. Whatever you call it, both terms are fine and good and I use them interchangeably.
The Italians call it calcio. And that’s the football/soccer that inspired me to start this blog.
I love Italian soccer in all of its forms — Serie A, Lega B, the National Team. This blog will follow those subjects as well as Italian players making their way in other leagues.
Who Is the “Brilliant Italian Soccer Man?”
I’ve been thinking about starting a blog about calcio for quite a while. But today’s headline on Deadspin finally pushed me over the edge:
Who’s that unnamed but brilliant “Italian soccer man?” Why, it’s Fabio Quagliarella, a veteran of Serie A. The anonymity of the headline, the dumbing down of the news for a soccer-ignorant readership, irked me and made me laugh at the same time.
So I thought this would be a good time to get started on the blog I’ve thought about for a while. Indeed, there are plenty of other sites out there about Italian soccer – IFTV has been my English-language go-to for a while. I’m not here to compete with them. Rather I’d like to focus on an incredible goal or a “brilliant Italian soccer man” with each post that I write. Here’s my chance to learn more about Italian soccer and to share my excitement with all of you.
Here, again, is Quagliarella scoring what is possibly the goal of the season for Sampdoria. This clip also includes the two prior goals from Quagliarella’s teammate Grégoire Defrel and Q’s post-match interview.
